Hello Teens,

Most of us may have heard about this initiative. However, I am doing a post on it to inform the unaware. MyElimu is a project started up by a Tanzanian, Given Edward who was 19 at the time to solve the problem of a “harsh” education system in his country, Tanzania. Given started up this project to bring students from all over the world (although he started off having just his home country in mind) together to learn collaboratively. MyElimu was built on the concept of sharing of ideas; this further helps to prove what most educators say nowadays that “If you can’t teach it, you haven’t understood it.” I have gone through the website and I have noticed that apart from the myriad of topics from various subjects taught in high school which students have a read on, study with, use as homework/project resource tools, there is also a forum where students can discuss on the topics that they have learnt. This makes room for them to table their problems and areas where they did not quite understand, someone else on the forum who has a grasp of the topic would share his knowledge with the rest of the students helping them understand the topic and even making that information which he is sharing more permanent in his memory.
The MyElimu concept is something that is changing the education system in Tanzania and hopefully the rest of the world. It is affecting lives constantly and is taking a bold step into creating a generation of well-educated young Africans.

How it works?

myElimu.com is a forum website. Students come together to discuss subjects that are taught in their classes. Any students can start a discussion, as long as they are members of the forum.  One can become a member by visiting www.myElimu.com and click ‘register’. One can also easily register by clicking ‘register with Facebook’ which will register you to MyElimu quickly by using your Facebook details. Given Edward, 19, who founded the website says that they added this feature after most students’ requests.

After you have successfully register and become a member, you can then go to the homepage where you will see different discussion rooms categorized according to subjects e.g History, Math, Economics, etc. Click on the subject you wish to discuss and there you will see different discussions that are already started and you can also start your own by clicking “New Topic”. Other students will see the discussion topic you started and they will start discussing with you.

MyElimu as an organization aims at transforming the reception of education to be more enjoyable among students by presenting it in a form they love and understand. MyElimu.com is one of the projects that will help in achieving that.
